In coastal shrines, this statue represents the Spirit of the Receding Tide. Unlike statues that pour water from on high, she holds her jug low to symbolize the water returning to the earth. It is said that the basin of this fountain is never truly empty; even in the heat of summer, a thin layer of "Ghost Water" remains at her feet. Sailors often visit this fountain to wash their hands before a journey, believing the Lady will "carry" their prayers safely across the waves.
